Image: standardmedia

Just because you’ve found the right top and finally got your pants tailored, doesn’t mean that your outfit is sorted. Without the right pair of shoes, a ‘perfect’ outfit can be far from ideal. It may sound dramatic of us to say, but what you wear on your feet can make or break an entire look. And, this is especially true if your shoes look like they’ve been around too many blocks in their lifetime. With our guide to the must have shoes for men, all your daily activities will be catered for. Have shoes at the ready for the office, the gym, the bar, or a wedding and you won’t need to visit the shoe shop for at least twelve months.

1. The Black Dress Shoe

For those upcoming formal occasions or just a regular working week, the black dress shoe is a non-negotiable item of footwear to own. Every man should at least own one suit, so it’s natural to own a classic pair of black dress shoes.

You acknowledge that ‘dress to impress’ means bringing your absolute A-game from head to toe, so a bit a polish can go a long way with ensuring your formal look is completed with a shoe that’s clean and scuff free.

2. The Brown Dress Shoe

The brown dress shoe can be considered the younger, cooler cousin of its black equivalent. In today’s fashion world, brown is the new black so tan or dark brown is an acceptable alternative for occasions that are a little adventurous, yet still proper.

3. The Slip-On

A mix between casual and dressy, a pair of slip-on shoes rank highly on the list of must have shoes for men. As this type of shoe covers a range of different styles including the boat shoe and the tassel loafer, there’s room to pick your style accordingly. Since not every occasion is sneaker appropriate, these casual shoes will serve you well for those situations where you want to advance your look.

These slip-on shoes provide a comfortable and breathable casual-cool look for each smart-casual occasion (think: loafers and chinos). The safest colour options to guarantee their versatile nature are classic navy or tan.

4. The Boot

Image: The Trendspotter

A pair of boots can be worn all year round and are a definite must-have for men. A pair of suede desert boots makes a casual, and comfortable addition to your wardrobe. For an edgier aesthetic, opt for a high-ankle black or dark leather brown boot and wear with cuffed pants.

5. The Low Top White Sneaker

For that casual weekend look, a pair of white low top trainers tops the list of casual shoes every man should own. These shoes make up a casual, neat look when styled with jeans. Choose from a classic pair of converse, or opt for leather for a more luxurious look. You can inject personality into your style here with detailing of the colour, type or material of laces you choose to feature.

Grey trousers are an essential wardrobe staple for good reason. Extremely versatile, the grey trouser is everything the modern man needs for his nine to five hustle. When you own a grey pair of high quality, tailored trousers, you’ll no longer need to stress about finding a completely new outfit each morning. The styling possibilities are endless. Dress them up with smart separates, or dress them down with T-shirts. As for colour matching, grey is simple enough to look great with just about any colour, so don’t worry about feeling constricted.

Our Guide | How to Style Grey Trousers Every Day of the Week

Monday – Ease Into It

Ease into the start of the working week with a slim fitting, white linen shirt. It’s casual enough to start the week off slow while replying to emails and finding your feet, but it still looks smart. Bonus, breathable fabric is extremely comfortable! Pair this outfit with a pair of smart, well-polished Derby shoes to start your week off right.

Tuesday – Smart Separates

Show your colleagues that you mean business by wearing smart separates. Pair your grey trousers with a navy, or lightly checked jacket for a stylish business look. Keep it simple or spice it up with a bold colour choice to match your unique image and personality. Hint* avoid black for this look to avoid looking overly formal and top-heavy.

Wednesday – Grey on Grey

You’ve made it to the middle of the week, so today you deserve a low-key, comfortable dress style. Opt for a slim-fitting pastel (or monochromatic) sweatshirt to pair with your trousers. The formality of your trousers means you won’t come across too casual, and if you’re concerned you will, wear a button-up shirt underneath or an unstructured blazer on top. Pair this look with a pair of clean, white sneakers or your favourite pair of desert boots.

Thursday – Modern / Conventional

Wear something that is office appropriate but can easily be substituted for a weekend outfit. A simple cardigan is the perfect piece of smart-casual wear for your Thursday in the office. The V-shaped cardigan is classically understated, yet substantial enough to provide frame and structure alongside your grey trousers. Pair it with an oxford shirt and suede loafers for a seamlessly polished look.

Friday – Wrap up the Working Week

It’s almost the weekend and you might feel tempted for a few after-work drinks. To be prepared for this, go for your handy chore jacket to display a casually tailored appearance. The boxy shape of this jacket will complement the slim fit of your trousers and can easily be paired with a T-shirt of your choice. Keep things tonal with off-white or khaki to match, and pair this stylish outfit with a pair of lace-up boots.

WHAT TO | Wear to the Airport

Stylish Men’s Airport Outfit Guide

When travelling between cities or countries you’ll eventually have to decide what to wear to the airport. Amidst the long overnight trips, overtired children and soulless bars, it’s hard to view the airport as a style hotspot. However, if we’ve learnt anything from the male population of celebrities, it’s that the airport is now a leading stage for the well-dressed. Typically, your decision will be between style or comfort, and while both equally important, the two are not mutually exclusive. Before you find yourself obsessing over what to wear to the airport, read on to view our recommended airport styling tips and get your stylish airport outfit sorted.

3 Failsafe Travel Outfits

Airport Athleisure

Athletic wear is ideal for comfort, which is everything you need when you board your next flight. The goal of this outfit style is to try to look smart but still feel like you’re wearing pyjamas. Style this strategically to avoid looking like you just rolled out of bed, even if you did. Wear your sportswear stables with livelier, more structured pieces of clothing. Always stick to closed in shoes, and if the weather permits, complement your shoes with collared outwear such as denim jacket or trench coat. Swap the hoodie for a sweater or pullover, and stick to neutral colours rather than something bright, patterned, or with a slogan. You can dress yourself up with accessories such as a leather backpack or a cap. Keep it simple, deciding what to wear to the airport should be straightforward, you just need to look smart and be able to sit down in your clothes for a while. If you’ve ticked both these boxes, you’ve found yourself an athleisure outfit to wear to the airport.

The Business Traveller

If you’re travelling to a destination where you’ll be spending your time in a boardroom, rather than at the beach, it’s best you maintain a professional style of dress when choosing what to wear to the airport. Stick to loafers or boat shoes for ease of slipping them on and off, and to get through security quickly. Always bring a jacket or a blazer, and stick to comfortable fitting trousers, jeans or chinos. It’s likely you’ll only bring one suit with you so to avoid creasing it’s best you wear a tailor-made suit which will always be made with a higher grade material and will result in a better drape of the fabric. Arriving at your destination looking as sharp as when you took off is impossible if your tailoring is a crumpled heap. So go for a high-twist fabric such as cotton or wool to maintain a semi-kempt look. For the business traveller deciding what to wear to the airport, dress as if you’re expecting to run into a client on the route.

Plenty of Pockets

In a business casual fashion, opt for business style on top and include a jacket so you can optimise your use of pockets. If your luggage is nearing capacity, any extra pockets you have are your best friend, especially when dealing with a strict airline. When choosing a jacket, choose a neat and structured style. Ideally a suit jacket with multiple passport and credit-card-sized pockets you can use to your advantage. Avoid looking too dressed up by opting for a pair of chinos on the bottom with a comfortable and stretchy fabric.

The same goes with your hand luggage. The more pockets, the better. A simple leather duffle bag is always in fashion and can look great with any style of airport wear you choose. Organise your cords and your documents using the internal pockets, and rest assured knowing where everything is. When deciding what to wear to the airport, always choose versatile pieces that you can wear multiple times over your trip.

Let’s face it, what you wear when travelling is as equally important as what you wear when you reach your destination, so pick wisely.
HOW TO | Wear a Waistcoat

Waistcoats aren’t difficult to wear, but there are a few dos and don’ts that you should bear in mind.

Men’s style is becoming increasingly relaxed and laid-back. Corporate attire is becoming less important, startups are switching to ‘business-casual’ dress codes and there are increasingly fewer occasions that require formal tailoring. However. There are still occasions in life where dressing to impress is very important – and the stature of a timeless 3-piece men’s suit with a jacket and tie can give you a stylish edge. This look is elegant, powerful and sophisticated.

Here are our tips for wearing a waistcoat:

The Dos & Don’ts of Wearing a Waistcoat

Do…

Get the Fit Right

A waistcoat is pretty simple – there are just 2 main things you need to think about when it comes to the fit. The first one is pretty obvious… Does it fit around your middle? Waistcoats are designed to cinch at the back and flatter your waist. If it is too loose, you will lose the striking and flattering look that you’re meant to get from the piece. Make sure the waistcoat hugs your torso – it shouldn’t hang loosely from your shoulders!

Make a Statement

If you like to dress boldly and with confidence, a waistcoat that contrasts with the colour of your suit can really set you apart from the crowd.

Dress It Down

A waistcoat doesn’t have to be an exclusively formal piece. You can wear your waistcoat separately from a suit, and pair it with relaxed shirts, chinos or jeans. Your waistcoat can even be a trendy weekend alternative to a sports coat or blazer.

Have Fun with Different Fabrics

Waistcoats come in all shapes and sizes, and they can be a great way to add some extra diversity and flair to your wardrobe. We highly recommend the classic pairing of a wool dinner suit with a silk brocade waistcoat, and having a couple of flannel or checked tweed waistcoats is a great option for smart-casual events too.

Don’t…

Fasten the Bottom Button

Whether you’re wearing a business suit, wedding suit or a casual outfit, you should never fasten the bottom button of your waistcoat! Leaving this button undone makes sure that the waistcoat sits cleanly on your hips and looks natural and well-fitted.

Show Your Shirt

A waistcoat is designed to cover your waist and hips, but brands often cut their trousers so low that the shirt can be seen beneath your waistcoat. This isn’t the best look, so make sure that your suit is tailored so that your shirt isn’t popping out!

Throw in A Tie-clip

A well-tailored formal look is all about balance. One mistake people often make is to wear a waistcoat and a tie clip together. Both items do the same job (keep your tie in check), so it doesn’t really make sense to wear both!

*

And there you have it! The dos and don’ts of wearing a waistcoat! If you have any questions – or would like to arrange a suit for an upcoming event – don’t hesitate to get in touch.

HOW TO | Pack for a Summer Weekend Getaway

There is a common misconception that dressing for summer means sloppier fashion – but we don’t agree! Summer doesn’t have to equate to board shorts, singlets and thongs – in fact, your summer wardrobe can be your trendiest yet! Here’s how to pack for a summer holiday with style:

Choose Light Fabric

Fabric is the most important thing to consider when it comes to your summer wardrobe. Choosing cool and lightweight fabrics like linen and cotton will ensure that you look stylish without looking sweaty! A cotton chambray shirt with rolled-up sleeves is a great option if you want to look trendy yet effortlessly cool. Your summer clothes selection is also not complete without a white linen shirt, which you can wear at the beach or dress up with some chinos and loafers. If you don’t want to wear long sleeves, you can also opt for a polo shirt in a range of colors and patterns.

Neutral Coloured Pants

Let’s get one thing straight – board shorts are swimmers and shouldn’t be worn outside of the pool/beach! Instead of wearing board shorts, why not pack two pairs of neutrally-coloured (e.g. navy, taupe, etc.) shorts that you can mix and match with your shirts. A pair of clean and crispy white chinos also epitomises summer style – but chinos in beige or other neutral colours will also look great. Cuff the pants at the ankles for a relaxed vibe!

Boat Shoes

Why slip into a pair of thongs, when you can slip into a pair of boat shoes or loafers instead? A nice pair of boat shoes in brown or navy are comfortable, stylish and perfect for a well-groomed yet relaxed aesthetic. Make sure that you wear them with invisible socks to prevent smells or blisters!

Accessories

The heat of summer provides limited opportunities for layering your style, so we recommend that you make the most of accessories instead. The best accessory for summer is a trendy pair of sunglasses. We recommend some classic Wayfarers or Aviators. You could also get yourself a stylish and practical watch and a leather belt or two. These items are sure to add a finishing touch to all of your outfits.

*

And there you have it! Follow these tips and you’ll have the trendiest summer holiday ever!

HOW TO | Embrace Sustainable Fashion

With thousands of tonnes of clothing sent to landfill each year, the world of fashion has a significant impact on the environment. Did you know that dying garments different colours (to match fashionable colours) is the second biggest polluter of water on a global scale? It dumps inks, bleaches, dyes and minute fibres into the water cycle, and this is awful for the environment. Furthermore, The World Wide Fund for Nature says that it takes up to 20,000 litres of water to produce just one T-shirt and a pair of pants.

Thankfully, there are many ways you can shake up your clothing habits and contribute to a better world without going on an extreme menswear diet. Here’s how you can embrace more sustainable fashion:

Sustainable Fashion Tip #1: Check Your Wardrobe

Embracing more sustainable fashion can be a simple as thinking more carefully – and doing a wardrobe itinerary – before you purchase new garments. Look at the types of garments you already own, as well as the colours and fabrications. You might be surprised at how many clothes you already have, rediscover forgotten favourites and make better decisions next time you need clothes! Maybe you don’t really need that new shirt after all?

Sustainable Fashion Tip #2: Repair Old Items

You know how the saying goes: ‘If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’! This is very true when it comes to menswear – don’t get rid of clothes if they’re still great quality. The saying ‘If it’s broke, fix it’ is equally true. Most of us don’t think about mending a pair of pants when we tear them – but it’s definitely better for the environment than purchasing a new pair! Why not acquaint yourself with your local tailor and dry cleaner – they will have the skills to make old or damaged clothes as good as new, and you’ll help the environment and your wallet!

Sustainable Fashion Tip #3: Go for Timeless Pieces

When the new seasons and trends hit stores, it’s easy to get carried away with a careless approach to shopping. We’re not saying that you can’t buy must-have items every now and then – but make sure you have got a solid roster of trusty staple items that won’t go out of fashion. We recommend that you have a white and a light blue shirt, a navy and a grey sweatshirt, dark trousers, dark denim jeans, brown suede brogues or loafers, a sophisticated winter coat, a classy belt and three block-colour T-shirts in yoru favourite shades. These items will never lose their style!

Quality is also essential when it comes to curating a sustainable wardrobe that will last a long time and help to reduce waste. Do a stock-take of your wardrobe, identify which new items you need, and research the best available quality for your budget. If you do a little digging, you can find great sustainable pieces off of the high street. There are also great vintage stores and op shops that will offer wallet-friendly prices. More on this below!

Sustainable Fashion Tip #4: Buy Second-Hand

The most sustainable items of clothing are those already in your wardrobe – but don’t forget they could also be in an op shop, waiting to be taken home again! Visit your local op shops, and browse second-hand clothing sites like Depop (great for sportswear and all things 90s), Grailed (cult brands and rare items) and Vestiare Collective (if ou want designer pieces) to shop without the guilt. If you want to make sure that your second-hand purchases will fit perfectly, measure the items that you currently wear, then compare them to the items for sale.

Finding the perfect cool, sophisticated and stylish wedding reception outfit can be difficult, especially if there’s a strict theme or dress code. Thankfully, we’re here to help you choose the right outfit! Here are 4 tips for choosing what to wear to a wedding reception:

Know the Dress Code

This invitation should tell you everything you need to know about the reception’s dress code, and therefore help you to decide what is appropriate to wear as a guest. This invitation could be specific – for example ‘lounge suit’ or ‘tuxedo’, or it could say something vaguer like ‘party clothes’. If you’re unsure, just confirm the dress code with the organiser – you could even send them a photo of the outfit you intend to wear to double-check that it fits the brief.

Respect Your Hosts

A wedding reception isn’t the best place to debut your brand new green onesie. Although it might be tempting to take risks and dress to stand out, you don’t want to take any attention away from the bride and groom.

Consider the Location

The location of the wedding – along with the time of year and the general dress code – is essential for your outfit choice. For example, if it’s being held at the beach, cream linen tailoring can look fantastic. If it’s in the country, dig out your glen check suit and your favourite pair of brogues. If it’s in an urban location in the city, something more modern and unusual could be a perfect choice.

Wear Something You’re Comfortable In

An exciting occasion can tempt you to wear something fancy and elaborate that you would never usually wear. However, it’s important for you to remember that a well-cut and elegant suit is always better than something flashy in terms of elegance. You don’t want to draw attention away from the groom, and you don’t want to feel uncomfortable or like you’re trying to be someone else. Dress in your style, but elevate it!
